Grand Opening Gesture

August 19, 2008

Wow.  Yesterday totally came out of left field.

Envy is over vilified, I think.  Me waxing poetic about my envy of the talent and charisma belonging to two beautiful Seattle-ites has sparked an internal coup, overthrowing my safe and not-too-satisfying status quo.

Rollercoasters of the last 6 years have created this unhealthy, adversarial relationship I have with money.  Not having any made me loathe it.  Once I got it again I never rehabilitated my relationship with it.

So last night I:

  1. sold my car (ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod), which allowed me to
  2. start a ski fund for this winter (2 two day trips and 1 four day trip),
  3. open a second checking account whose debit card will serve my alterna-credit needs (like renting a car) without affecting my daily checking, and
  4. put money in my savings account (it’s not just ‘kept change’ 😛 );
  5. created a budget that includes haircuts and clothes (oh my! for me?!);
  6. realized I am overpaying my cell, my Dish, my home phone and dsl (pretty much ALL of my bills);
  7. was shocked at my bank fees (*blush*);
  8. was brutally honest with myself about what I spend my money on and how much I actually make; and
  9. realized that DAMN I’m doing pretty well!

Denial is another skill I lack, and now that I have laid it out on the table I finally feel like I have money, money does not have me.

p.s. To my budgeting buddy (yes, it was group therapy!)… THANK YOU for also facing this tough task!  We WILL be homeowners – independently of male companionship!  And YES I got on BofA online this morning!!  HUGS

  1. YES!

    That’s what I have to say, YES. You sound like you “met the Lord” last night and it went very well.

  2. Can I hear an amen? AMEN!!

    Oh – sorry 😛

    Oooh, Kelly. When the day comes, Will you come out and help provision the barn and pick some horsies to go in it? We can saddle Brad up on the tractor, have him put in a galloping track! Of course you MUST be with me for the first run! My dressage horses are gonna be cross-trained, Baby! (Suzanne – oh yeah – you’re coming too! But I’ll make sure you don’t have another droopy helmet! HAHA)
