My heart is heavy

September 27, 2008

This morning my dearest equine friend told me that her days of being Super Horse are drawing to an end.  Her hocks are finally giving out and she’s officially getting old.

I can’t tell you how much I owe to her.  I have taught so many lessons on her; so many students have experienced so many amazing “firsts” on her.  She’s a very special animal.  Beautiful, talented, smart, challenging and most of all – loving.

Today was the first time we spoke of her retirement and I feel like I owe it to her to make sure her days are still useful and happy.  She will never be happy to be a pasture ornament – she’s a worker bee – she likes having a job.  Now her job needs to be lazy trail rides and even more kisses.

We’ll try some arthritis treatment and regular exercise.  I hope more than anything that she’ll still be around when I go to Kentucky.  She was born there and I would be honored for her to spend her retirement with me there.

I know Miss Haley would be thrilled to have her to explore the hills and dales…
