A big “first” (in my mind) for Haley

October 5, 2008

I took Haley to the barn today.  Since Lady needs to be walked, we thought Haley was the perfect girl for the job.  Well, kind of.  You see, Lady is a BIG HORSE.  She’s a Thoroughbred and they are typically tall, but this mare is built for the ages:  she’s solid and she is long.  She’s like the equine equivalent of an aircraft carrier.  Seriously.

Haley has ridden Lady a million times.  Untold hours of walking, many more trotting, and even a couple times around at the canter (eek!) – but never off the lunge line.

I figured that I needed to just cut the cord and relent in my Professional Trainer OCD obsession with perfection.  I totally know that I’ll make her loathe everything to do with riding if I don’t just let go and let her have fun.  How handy I just so happen to have a 24 year old horse (who I have been riding for over 10 years), whose age is finally catching up with her, and is feeling quite arthritic 😀

Yeah – not a big “risk” I took, huh?  Well, I did have to get over my favorite crusade…  What is that topic I love to rail about?  Size-appropriate mounts?  What?  Children should ride ponies?  Really??  😛

Big thanks to Denise for letting her follow along some!

  1. Oh Lady.

I miss that mare, but I’m glad she has you (and now Miss Haley too). And don’t worry, I’ll bite my tongue on the issue of your “crusade” (I HUGELY agree, BUT in this case can make an exception!).

That second pic raises up the little ball of sadness and beautiful envy in the back of my throat. I wish I was there SO MUCH.

  2. Oh my…it seems like yesterday that I was doing the same thing with you. Where does the time go? I can just see YOU doing what Haley did today. My heart wells with love and pride. Each string you cut, it gets a little easier to let go…now I have tears…
