Projects: big and small

February 4, 2013

Projects come in all shapes and sizes – but the size is often more determined by the emotional outlay required to complete it than the physical expenditure.

I am the Queen of Pain Avoidance.  If it makes me uncomfortable I will go to amazing lengths to push it to the bottom of my To-Do List.  Dealing with the deluge of incoming mail at home is boring and ungratifying. The lack of pleasure I receive dealing with it results in MOUNTAINS of mail that gets stashed in a bag or box or some such receptacle do be dealt with at some vague date in the future. Needing to find something in that slush pile takes so much time and frustration.  This leads to imagining THE most stylish and efficient solution that will CURE ALLLLL MY WOES… when I can find just the right cabinet, or when the exact thing I want goes on sale.

See what I did there?  I’m still avoiding it.

So I end up with this.

This started out as a the pile that grew in the corner of the dining room when we moved in 2.5 years ago.  When we threw our Christmas Eve Eve party it took over the only meager (and not at all clear) corner of our bedroom. Yesterday morning I dragged it out back into the light of day.

Oh! My color palette in action!

August 13, 2008

Just add a large dose of black and it’s my bedroom colors!

Hmmm… I may need to steal some ideas from here… 😉

Next up, DIY electrical

August 12, 2008

Let’s hope it’s not a hair-raising experience!

Anyhoo… I need to replace the lamp in my FABULOUS new Horsey Homage to Nana & Papa, and I plan on relying heavily on the Master DIY’er, BAS (Beautiful Aunt Susie, for the uninformed), for her lamp rewiring expertise.

Then I saw this little light fixture and I’m thinking that this it totally a DIY possibility…

It’ll be on a smaller scale, and possibly in half-round, but I’m thinking bedroom light fixutre here!

Take that, Closet Hag!

August 10, 2008

Organized closets are a beautiful thing.  But before you invest in Closet Maid, be prepared for some ulcers unless you are more than a remedial DIYer.  DO NOT call their customer service.  (Idiotic exchange with customer service)  They will only read to you the same directions you have in your hands.  If you ask them how to adjust the plans they’ll just tell you “adjust them”.

Little old me figured out what the “highly” trained CSR could not.  When you use a 5′-8′ kit in a 5′ closet, you lose one column of shelves.  You are also left without supports for the front edge of the short ends, so you have to improvise with the unused front support pillar.

You don’t get this…

You get this…

Take that, Closet Hag!

I’ve added about 60% more hanging room and tripled the shelf space.  Not bad for a DIY flunkee 😉

Wishful thinking

August 8, 2008

Because I can’t seem to get off my behind and get my bedroom done I am going to shoot for something slightly smaller, though still Herculean in my eyes:  my closet.  I’m going to install this nifty little do-dad and see if I can eliminate my need for additional clothes storage in my room.

I must admit, I’m a’scared!  This is going to require precise measuring, leveling, drilling and surely many expletives.  Everything that’s jammed in there now has to come out.  I have to patch, prime, paint.  Then the real trickery comes in.  I should equip Haley with a cattle prod and a bottle of Quaaludes, in case I need “assistance” at some point! 😛

The constant pursuit of unattainable perfection

July 15, 2008

This is how I describe my sport, dressage, to my students.  And it is a good thing.  But I am wondering if it’s in play in this whole redecoration business…

For example…  it makes me bat-shit-crazy to see all my imperfect paint lines and wall defects that are out of my skillset to fix.  I look at books and magazines and only see perfection.

While part of me wants to believe that this “perfection” is all part of really good staging, a bigger part thinks I am a completely anal perfectionist that has done a marginal job. *sigh*

Tell me…  how perfect are the finish details on your projects?  Really?

Bedroom: P.O.A.

July 14, 2008

I’m officially running out of time, money and motivation.  I HAVE to get my room done this week, so that I can get ready for Haley to come home next week (YAY!! 😀 )

Monday:  empty out room (except for bed)

Tuesday:  SHOP for paint, bedding, draperies; prepare walls

Wednesday:  prime, paint

Thursday:  reassemble room!

Friday:  run away to Seattle 😀
